The elderly woman was in her unit, in View Street, when, at around 10pm Tuesday, she heard a noise in her bedroom and found two thieves making their escape from her bedroom.
Disturbed by the elderly woman, the thieves dropped jewellery and other property belonging to her, and escaped through a window. More property belonging to the victim was found outside the unit.
Detective Inspector Luke Rankin said police immediately attended the location, canvassing the area trying to locate the offenders.
Crime scene police have also attended the woman’s unit, taking finger prints and other physical evidence. Police are also reviewing CCTV footage taken in the area.
Det Inspector Rankin said the victim was shaken but otherwise physically unhurt.
He said the victim is an elderly woman who lives alone, and heard the noise at about 10pm.
“She walked towards the noise [to investigate] and saw two people running out of the bedroom.”
He said police obtained details from the victim, and later located a quantity of jewellery and other property belonging to the victim on the footpath outside her unit.
Initial investigations suggest the offenders gained entry into the unit through a window, with police finding a chair propped up underneath a window of the unit.
With many break ins and thefts crimes of opportunity, Det Inspector Rankin said it was timely to remind everyone to secure all windows and doors at their property.
He said police will continue to review CCTV from the scene and are stepping up police patrols around the area, as part of their investigations. He urged anyone with any knowledge of the break in to contact Bathurst Police.
