The official lap record of one minute and 59.36 seconds, set last November by factory Audi driver Christopher Mies, was obliterated by the Brabham BT62 driven by Luke Youlden, who set a lap time of 1:58.65 on Saturday morning.
The record set by Youlden won’t officially stand given the time was not completed in a competitive session, however it remains the fastest ever time set around Mount Panorama by an Australian built car.
Despite the speed Sam Brabham, son of team owner David, had no intention of attempting to break the record.
“We were always just coming to Bathurst to do demo runs. But after our run on Thursday, we realised just how close we were, so for today [Saturday] we just went for it. We weren’t really looking for it, but it was really special to break that record,” he said.
When not on the track, the BT62 was found at the back of the paddock, often surrounded my fans wanting to see and get photos with the sportscar.
“The reception by the fans has really been awesome. It is now the only car manufacturer here in Australia, down in South Australia, and that is something the fans love. Brabham is a great Australian brand, got great history, passion and people here,” said Brabham.
Brabham are now heading in international, seeking entry into the 2021/2022 24 Hours of Le Mans.
