That’s what councillor Jacqui Rudge and Bathurst Regional Council manager of strategic planning Janet Bingham say of the revamped Bathurst Macquarie Heritage Project/Scholarship.
With applications to close in just over a month, Ms Bingham and Cr Rudge are keen to make sure members of the community have plenty of time to get involved.
“Make an inquiry, put in an application,” Ms Rudge said on Monday. “It’s important for us to hang on to this.”
Bathurst’s 2015 bicentenary celebrations introduced the Bathurst Macquarie Heritage Medal, described as a nationally recognised annual prize awarding $25,000 to an individual who demonstrated “a significant contribution to the protection and promotion of Australia’s built, social, cultural or environmental heritage outside their day-to-day role”.
The award was presented in 2015 to Duncan Marshall, in 2016 to Professsor Robyn Sloggett, in 2017 to Dr Scott Robertson and 2018 to Dr Gianfranco Cresciani.

Council has now revamped the award and has established the Bathurst Macquarie Heritage Project/Scholarship to celebrate “local major achievements in the region’s heritage and history and to support the continued learning and training of Bathurst’s residents in heritage management and conservation and heritage trades and skills”.
A $10,000 scholarship or project grant will support an individual and/or community group/organisation to undertake a major work or learn in:
- Conservation, maintenance and adaptive reuse projects of heritage items or at-risk buildings and sites of heritage value within the Bathurst region.
- Promotion and interpretation of the history and heritage of the Bathurst region, its buildings and places, natural environment, people and projects.
- Support learning in heritage management and conservation.
- Foster and support the growth of heritage trades and practices.
The $10,000 scholarship or project grant will be paid in two $5000 instalments.
“We think it's exciting because it’s more of a local focus,” Cr Rudge said. “We think that's an integral part of the revamping of the Macquarie Medal.
“We would like to see more local people involved in this.”
Nominations are open and will close on Friday, March 15.
More information, and the application form, is available on the Bathurst Regional Council website.
Ms Bingham said it was important that applicants contacted council, or herself directly on 6333 6211, before they applied.
