THE game might have been one-sided but it's still left Western NSW Mariners FC and Bathurst District Football's representative side plenty to dwell upon.

Mariners ran riot in a 10-0 win at Proctor Park on Wednesday evening, scoring five goals in each half, but the pre-season trial was less about the scoreline and more about both teams assessing their formations, combinations and communication.
Mariners' defensive work often made it difficult for Bathurst to bring the ball out of their own half while the Western men worked the ball forward smoothly along both wings throughout the match.
Western coach Mark Rooke said the number one aim from the match was to keep intensity levels at a high, which for the most part his team achieved.
"It's about trying to complete things that we're doing at training and that's what we did," he said.
"We wanted to keep ourselves motivated in the game because sometimes when you score a couple of goals you tend to switch off.
"We pressed them and we wanted to ball speed to be quick throughout the match. For majority of the game it was quick but there were a few moments where we slowed down a bit.
"At the end of the day the few things we were concerned about working on came out."

With more squad members available for the upcoming trial against NSW State League side Western Condors the Mariners will have more flexibility for positional experimentation.
Bringing together players from various BDF first grade sides naturally adds a level of difficulty to formulating a cohesive plan and, with that in mind, coach Brent Osborne said the match was a great chance for the team to learn each others' game.
"It's a difficult thing to pull players from different teams who all have different ways of playing and put them in a team together and try and beat the best team in the region. It's a tall ask and the guys did exceptionally well," he said.
"We'll be so much better for the hit-out. It didn't go the way we planned but it's not always about the result for those sorts of games. It's about getting game time as a group.
"We had some good chances and that's a positive sign. There's some really good players in there and if we can them to click together, which is a difficult thing to do in a short time frame, then we'll give sides trouble."
Bathurst will continue their training over the current week in preparation for the following weekend's game against Dubbo.
