Although plans for a go-kart track atop Mount Panorama have been given the green light by Bathurst Regional Council, a local climate action group is still not sold on the approved location.

In December, councillors voted in favour of modifications to the original go-kart track design for Mount Panorama’s McPhillamy Park at a vote of seven to two.
Despite this, the Bathurst Community Climate Action Network [BCCAN] are continuing to oppose the approved location on the grounds of potential social and environmental impacts.
“While we are for the go-kart track, we’d prefer that it be connected to the proposed second circuit,” BCCAN president Jack Fry said.
A portion of land on the western side of McPhillamy and Reid parks has been selected as the site for Mount Panorama’s second circuit.
The BCCAN has outlined a series of issues with the approved location including noise pollution and the potential impacts on box gum grassy woodland, an endangered ecological community.
“Lots of people use McPhillamy Park as a place of quiet reflection, and BCCAN feels that this could be lost with a go-kart track in close proximity,” Mr Fry said.
“Furthermore, some of the trees near the site are 80 to 100 years old, and with the increase in tourism, it could hurt the environment these trees live in.”
Of particular concern to the BCCAN is the proposed 11,000 square metres of space that has been set aside to load and unload karts.
“The volume of karts could lead to issues such as soil compaction and root disturbance, which in turn could cause erosion and pollution,” Mr Fry said.
