A Bathurst woman smelled something fishy soon after she ended a call from an unknown person.
But it was too late for her.
She had been scammed for almost $1000.
Police said a man pretending to be an NBN technician told her that her internet was running slowly.
He asked her to log into her bank details so that he could test the speed.
"The woman was on the phone for two hours to the caller," police said.
"She lost almost $1000 from her account. She realised once the call was finished and went to check her account."
Police are appealing to residents to be sceptical about such calls and, if they fall prey to a scammer, to notify their bank at once about the incident.
"Never log in or give your details out over the phone," police said.
"No matter how convincing these criminals are, they are scammers and will rip you off."
