First-time state election campaigner Brenden May had a day he might rather forget on Thursday, but still managed to finish with a smile on his face.
About the same time Bathurst election manager Stuart Evennett was drawing the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party candidate's name last out of the barrel during the official ballot draw, Bathurst Regional Council rangers were issuing Mr May with a $112 fine for parking too long in George Street.
Mr May had parallel-parked his truck - which has campaign posters plastered all over the back - alongside King's Parade while he attended the Bathurst Combined Pensioners and Superannuants Association's candidates forum at Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre.
He enjoyed the forum, but maybe not the ticket awaiting him when he returned to the vehicle.
"When I parked it I saw it was a one-hour area and I thought the forum wouldn't go for any longer than that," he said.
"As I was walking back, though, I looked at my watch and thought, 'bloody hell, I'm going to get a ticket here'.
"Still, I'm happy to pay it. It's just one of those things."
Mr May said the ticket had been issued for parking longer than an hour, not for parallel parking in an angle parking spot.
"You can't angle park a truck," he laughed.
Mr May said his first experience on the campaign trail had been a "rollercoaster" at times.
"It's been an interesting journey," he said.
"I'm on the ground every day of the week and the feedback has been extremely positive."
