And surviving class members are coming together again this weekend at the Bathurst City Community Club, marking their 26th reunion in the past 66 years.
The occasion will also mark 50 years since the class held its first reunion at Bathurst RSL in 1969.
Since then, former students have come together every couple of years to catch up and reminisce about the old school days, with further reunions for 2021 and 2023 already booked in.
Bathurst's Jim Grives and Marie Ford (nee Hargans) have taken on the responsibility for organising each reunion since 1999 and have again been busy confirming attendances and printing up programs.
In 1999, an invitation to attend the reunion was extended for the first time to the classes of 1951 and 1952, and eventually the invitation was extended to all past Bathurst High School students.
The Class of '53 featured some notable students including dux Ian Beardwood; Edite Luks, who studied to become a doctor; and Robert North, who became a world-renowned expert in the field of immunology.
Dr North was head superintendent of the Trudeau Institute of Medicine from 1967-1976 and then director until 1995.
The Class of '53 also enjoyed success on the sporting field with the Bathurst High rugby league team, led by Vince Everingham, going down 10-0 to Muswellbrook High in the final of the statewide University Shield.
