As of 8.30pm, Mr May held 13.78 per cent of the 13,395 votes that had already been counted.
He is a long way from the lead, with incumbent Paul Toole of The Nationals comfortably in front with 53.53 per cent of the vote.
"We're very early into the counting at the moment. I don't know how I'm feeling at the moment," Mr May said.
"I'm just seeing it as it is. As we know, anything can happen in an election."
He has around seven per cent less of the vote than Country Labor's Beau Riley, a figure he has called "encouraging".
Mr May had a busy election day travelling around the electorate, starting early by setting up booths in places like Manduramana, Rockley and Carcoar.
Later in the day, he visited as many booths as he could in Bathurst to meet with voters, who he said received him well.
"I've had a very good response from the people I spoke to," he said.
