And when he gave up two lengths in the early stages of the Ladbrokes Cash In Stakes (307 metres) to Arrogant Leo ($8.50) a breakthrough win was looking very unlikely.
Racegoers were in for a shock.
All starters came out fairly evenly with the exception of race favourite Tupelo ($2) from the inside box.
The favourite's slip up allowed Jacobite Beau to enjoy some breathing room in the opening strides, but he still had plenty of ground to make up.
Arrogant Leo was the best away, from the three, while Arrogant Stella and Subzero Surf also began strongly from the outside boxes.
Entering the turn for home Arrogant Stella joined her kennel mate out in front briefly before she went wide on the bend.
Jacobite Beau continued to drive forward and moved up alongside Arrogant Leo in a close dash for cash.
The Derek Kerr-trained Jacobite Beau got the nod by a neck in a time of 18.08 seconds.
"He got near the front today and that made a big difference. He's from a really talented litter but he's just been such a bad beginner," Kerr said.
"He's all over the shop. He does as he feels each day. Loves the chase and his dinner when he gets home and today he finally won one for us.
"My wife said if this dog won a race I could buy a Harley. That's how confident she was," he laughed.
