Tuesday saw 13 bowlers from Sydney visit and combine with the women and men of Bathurst city for five games of triples. Wednesday's jackpot social bowls saw another good mid-week turn out with 26 bowlers playing two games of pairs and three triples games.
Game one
Pat Williams, Mick Burke and Ray Noonan 19 def Tony Copeland (Welcome Back Tony) Bob Heffernan & Gordon Holland 12. Team Noonan took the lead on the fourth end and were never headed they led 8-3 after seven ends 13-6 after 14 ends. Team Holland fought back to trail by only two after 18 ends but Noonan trio picked up a four and a single to seal victory. Ends to the winners 12-8
Game two
Ray Donald, John McDonagh and Gordon Death 24 defeated Hugh Mackay, Ray Newley and Jack Smith 11. Team Death took the lead early and were never headed. They led 8-2 after seven ends and 19-7 after 14 ends. They restricted team Smith to just seven ends to run out convincing winners. Ends 14-7 to the victors.
Game three
Bob Miskell, Graham Hobby and Phil Murray 17 defeated Rod Luck, Barry Mc Pherson and Pat Duff 15. Team Murray led 7-1 after seven ends and 13-8 after 14 ends team Duff out scored the Murray trio 7-4 over the last seven ends but could not make up the leeway. Ends were 11-10 to team Murray.
Game four
John Martin and Barry Seebrey 27 defeated Peter Ryan and John Davis 16. Team Seebrey led all the way in this encounter leading 12-4 after seven ends and 26-7 after 14 ends. Team Davies won six of the last seven ends but could not catch the runway leaders. Ends to the winners 12-9
Game five
Denis Oxley and Ian Cunningham 18 defeated Alan Clarke and Neville Kable 17. Denis and Ian won five of the first seven ends to lead 11-4. They led 15-9 after 14 ends. Alan and Nev fought back and levelled the scores at 17-17 on the 20 ends. Denis and Ian secured victory by scoring one shot on the 21st end. Ends to the victors 11-10. Friday saw a semi final of the "B" singles and one game of triples.
B singles semi-finals
Kevin Miller played Brian Burke. The Marker was John McDonagh. Brian got the better start and led 7-2 after five ends. Kevin fought back and levelled 7-7 after seven ends. Kevin skipped away again leading 19-13 after 17 ends and 24-15 after 22 ends. Brian fought back gallantly winning nine of the next ten ends to lead 30-29. Kevin scored victory on the 34th end scoring two shots to win.
Social jackpot triples
John Martin, Darcy Davis (visitor from Newcastle) and Ross James 19 defeated Ron Hollebone, Arch Ledger Denis Oxley 11. The James trio led all the way in this game they led 7-4 after six ends 13-8 after 12 end and cruised to victory. Ends were shared 9-9. Saturday saw the final of both A and B club singles championship.
A singles
John Finlay played Phil Gray. The marker president Ross James. The first eight ends resulted in singles and it was 4-4 in a tight tussle. Phil then settled into a rhythm and won six consecutive ends to lead 12-4. John tried hard but he could not find the form that he had displayed in his previous games. Phil clinched victory on the 27th end to win 31-12.
B singles
The final saw Kevin Miller play Luke Dobbie with Vice President Bryan Bromfield the Marker. Kevin got the jump and led 5-0 after two ends, Luke then won eight of the next ten ends to led 13-9. Kevin rallied and won five of the next eight ends to lead 22-17. Kevin allowed Luke only two more ends and clinched victory on the 28th end 31-19
Saturday socials
Game one
Bruce Rich and Paul Reece 21 defeated Arch Ledger and Mick Sewell 16. Arch and Mick led 8-4 after seven ends and 15-11 after 14 ends Bruce and Paul won the last five ends to shut Mick and Arch out of the game. Ends to winners 13-8.
Game two
Phil Murray, Brian Burke and Geoff Thorne 25 defeated Grant Brunson, Ian Schofield and Jim Grives 18. Team Grives led 4-0 after three ends. Team Thorne led 8-4 after seven ends 17-10 after 14 ends. Team Grives won the last three ends but could not make up the leeway. Ends to Team Thorne 11-10.
Game three
John McDonagh, Brodie Carter and Bob Lindsay 28 defeated Ron Hollebone, Paul Rodenhuis and Ray Noonan seven. Team Lindsay led from the third end, they led 5-4 after seven ends. 16-5 after 14 ends and ran out easy winners, winning 16 ends to five.
Sunday saw the fifth round of the Zone 4 Pennants. Number 2 grade lost to Dubbo Railway 10-0. Ian Schofield, Gary Hotham, Richard Simpson and John Finlay lost by two. Bob Lindsay, Bryan Broomfield, Mick Hall and Ross James lost by eight. Ray Fitzalan, John Archer, Peter Wibberley and Phil Gray lost by one.
Number 6 play Majellan and lost 9-1 57-44 ends 34-29: Ron Hollebone, Ron Cambrey, Paul Reece and Geoff Waters 16, Allan Clarke 15. John Fulton, Barrie Carter, Denis Oxley and Ray Noonan 12 Tim Pickstone 20. Kevin Miller, Joe McCurry, Luke Dobbie and Bobby Burke 16 Geoff Densmoke 22,
Number 7 Pennants played Orange Country Club and lost 10-0 65-47 ends 33-30. Arch Ledger, Bob Heffernan, Jack Smith and Jim Grives 15, Country Club 17, Barry McPherson, Bob Foster, Phil Murray and Norm Hayes 21, Country Club 24. Brendan Mags, Paul Rodenhuis, John McPherson and Hans Hummelshoj 11, Country Club 24.
U3A
After two week's break due to the rain, the U3A group came out to enjoy the morning sunshine. After drills of rolling the kitty, then bowls to the mat, a game of triples was held. Team one had Skip Wayne Bensley with Graham DeGabriel and Lead Alissa. Team two had skip Paul Rodenhuis with Second Julie Martello and Lead Lloyd Hansen.
Paul's team led early, taking the first three ends to lead five-nil. Wayne's group then rallied, taking the last three ends three, one, three for a 7-5 victory. Wayne's last two bowls turned a one-shot deficit to a three-shot win!
MAJELLAN MEN'S BOWLING CLUB

The Majellan Bowling Club wrapped up the No: 6 Pennants against Bathurst City on Sunday and with a bye next week have now completed the round robin with Oberon and Bathurst. With the Pennants season in full swing there was little time for social bowls but for those who braved the cooler temperatures on Saturday were given treat with a new format for the eight bowlers that turned up. This is how the week played out:
Sunday, March 24: Major Singles Championship game
Pat Hogan and Tony Press went head to head over 41 ends to get a result. With a close match throughout Pat Hogan lead from the beginning with Tony Press levelling the scores on the 35th end. Pat Hogan held on to take the win 31-25 in the end.
Tuesday, March 26: Social Bowls
Rink 2: Frank Farrell, Jim Clark and Ron McGarry levelled the score against Bob Bembrick, George Ballard and B. Jurd on the fourth end. Form here Team McGarry controlled the match with some consistent scoring to be 18-5 by the 13th end. Team McGarry taking the game quite easily in the end 30-14.
Rink 3: John Bosson, Paul Kennedy and John Croker were another team that had the numbers on the board against Terry Clark, Ian Warren and Terry Burke. Team Croker never looked to be threatened for the lead throughout the match with a final score 26-11.
Rink 4: Dick Graham, Noel Whitney and Tim Pickstone had a pennants trial match against Kevin Howard, Ken Hartwig and Alan Clark. With Team Clark taking the early lead it took some big scoring ends for Team Pickstone to come back and level the scores on the ninth end. It was from here that Team Pickstone dominated and ran away with the match winning 36-21 after 26 ends.
Saturday, March 30
Rink 5: Major Singles Championship Game. Pat Hogan and Peter Naylor braved the chilly weather to fight out what was to be a pretty good match up. However Pat Hogan had other ideas and absolutely annihilated Peter Naylor who never looked to be in the game. Pat led the match from start to finish to end up 31-15 after 26 ends.
The Social matches for the day were played in pairs with four teams and each team played six ends and then swapped opposition three times. The teams for the day were Hugh Brennan and Ron McGarry, Terry James and Tim Pickstone, Max Elms and Noel Whitney, and Tony Press and Alan Clark. The first round Team Pickstone five and Team McGarry five, Team Whitney five and Team Clark ten. The second round Team Whitney four and Team McGarry six, Team Clark five and Team Pickstone four. The third round Team Pickstone five and Team Whitney four, Team McGarry four and Team Clark seven. So the final results for the day are Team Clark with +nine, Team Pickstone zero, Team McGarry -one and Team Whitney -eight.
Sunday, March 31
Both No: 4's and No: 6's Pennants Teams played at the Majellan at 1pm with the following results: No: 4 -V- Orange Country Club.
Rink 2: Majellan's Brian Stevens, Tony Urza, Trevor Smith and Peter Naylor opened up the scoring for the first 9 ends against P. Griffith, C. Wright, S. Garside, and I Davidson with an impressive 18-0 lead. The Team from OCC struggled throughout the match to gain scoring position, but the effectiveness of the Majellan Team proved too good in the end winning 29-13.
Rink 3: Majellan's Tony McNamara, Rhys Harvey, Mick McDonald and Craig Bush again dominated the scoring against R. Robinson, P. Dyhini, J. Taylor, and R. Annis-Brown. Team Majellan were in sync and the points followed with an impressive 21-5 lead after 13 ends. Team Majellan taking an easy win 32-8 in the end.
Rink 4: Majellan's David Josh, Tony Hogan, John Hobson and Craig Townsend had a different start to the others with R. Robinson, R. Turnbull, G. Fletcher, and G. Carthew taking it to Majellan and levelling the scores twice throughout the match. It was Team Majellan that prevailed in the end 26-19.
Majellan Bowling Club defeated Orange Country Club 87 - 40. Majellan Team now have to win the next round against Orange City at Orange to progress to the finals at Gulgong, on May 4 and 5. No: 6 -V- Bathurst City Bowling Club.
Rink 5: Majellan's Trevor Sharpham, Pat Hogan, Ken Hartwig and Alan Clark had a close match against Ron Hollebone, Ron Cambey, Paul Reece and Geoff Waters. With Team Majellan pulling out all the stops it was a close game throughout with the scores level on the 16th and 20 ends to make the match that little bit more exciting. Unfortunately for Majellan, Bathurst City just got the win 16-15.
Rink 6: Majellan's Mick Simmons, Kerry Connors, Gary Cameron and Geoff Densmore turn the tide for Majellan against Kevin Miller, Joe McCurry, Luke Bobbie and Robert Burke. The Majellan team had to battle for the points they needed for the win especially after Bathurst City levelled the score after 9 ends. The Majellan team stayed strong until the end to take the win 22-16.
Rink 7: Majellan's Ron McGarry, Terry Burke, Noel Whitney and Tim Pickstone cruised through their match against John Fulton, Brody Carter, Denis Oxley and Ray Noonan. With Bathurst City stuck on three points for six ends the Majellan team took advantage of this, taking a ten point lead. Team Majellan sailed past the finish line 20-12.
Majellan Bowling Club defeated Bathurst City Bowling Club 57 - 44. The Majellan Bowling Club will now travel to Narromine for Zone 4 Pennant 6 Finals on May 4-5.
