MacKillop and All Saints' topped the Central West's Catholic and independent high schools, respectively, while Denison College Bathurst Campus was third among the government schools.
Schools' results from the 2018 NAPLAN exams, which cover reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy, were released on Wednesday.
Students in years three, five, seven and nine undertake the compulsory national testing each year.

Crunching the results from each tested year reveals the top-performing government, independent and Catholic high schools in the region.
Topping the list of government schools was Orange High with a combined student score of 5473 for the five tested areas.
Dubbo School of Distance Education ranked second with 5440 points, followed by Denison College Bathurst Campus (5395), Blayney High School (5363) and Cowra High School (5322).
Among the Catholic high schools, students from MacKillop College (5782) far outscored similar denomination schools in the Central West.
Next was St Matthew's Catholic College Mudgee with 5683 points, then James Sheahan Catholic High School in Orange (5641), St Stanislaus' College in Bathurst (5607) and Hennessy Catholic College in Young (5563).
Among the independent high schools across the Central West, another Bathurst school topped the list.
Students at All Saints' College (as it was known before merging with The Scots School) scored a combined 5887 in the NAPLAN results.
Second for independent schools was Bathurst's The Scots School with 5838 points.
Third was Kinross Wolaroi School in Orange with 5831 points, followed by Orange Anglican School (5820) and Dubbo Christian School (5669).
