People from all walks of life are affected daily by laws from the most basic ones that appear in our day to day lives, through to commercial and criminal laws that help govern and protect society.
Courts, legal agencies, solicitors, barristers, police, public libraries and other public organisations are all encouraged to get involved to help inform the wider community about services and programs that are available. It is also a time that those in the legal profession and their supporters can celebrate the amazing, yet at often times difficult, work that they perform each day.
Law Week for 2019 will be held from Monday, May 13 to Sunday, May 19 and has been developed with events to get communities involved and appeal to people from diverse backgrounds, organisations and perspectives.

Each state hosts it's own events which have intertwining themes that connect the overall week together. The focus this year looks at your rights and the range of assistance available, including "Unlock Your Law", and "Lawyers: protecting your rights", while also looking at current issues in society such as "Avoiding Scams". There are many events and opportunities to get involved in, along with the chance to take advantage of information regarding:
- Connecting people with the legal profession
- Knowing your legal rights
- Accessing the 'Find a lawyer' and 'Find legal answers' tools
- Pro bono schemes
- Alternative dispute resolutions
- Education initiatives
- Employment opportunities
- How to make a complaint regarding legal issues
- Courtroom tours and mock trials
- Expert information sessions
While Law Week help promote and education the public about legal matters, it also provides other services to the community including raising funds for charities such as the Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS), and by building awareness of critical issues within the industry such as "Justice For All" which deals with the issue of increasing numbers of women being imprisoned in facilities that aren't equipped to deal with female populations.
With over 500 events planned around Australia it is easy to get involved in in Law Week 2019. You can follow Law Week via your states website, on Facebook or on Twitter by joining the conversation the hashtag #LawWeek.
