BATHURST Base Hospital's nurses were described as 'leaders in their field' at an award ceremony marking International Nurses Day, where three were bestowed with the honour of being named the hospital's nurse of the year in their respective discipline.

Rachel Oaks, RN, surgical award, won Nurse of the Year, Tracey Best, an enrolled nurse in pediatrics, won Enrolled Nurse of the Year and Terri Latimore, was announced as Midwife of the Year.
Every year, on International Nurses Day, Bathurst Base Hospital acknowledges the hard work, dedication and talents shared by its staff.
Director of Nursing, and midwife, Tracy Wittich, who has been based at Bathurst base Hospital for seven months, said even in her short tenure at the hospital it is clear the nursing staff are first rate.
"They are among the best," she said.
"I've been in this role for seven months, and I am proud of the nursing and midwifery achievements I have seen," she said.
For Bathurst Base Hospital's nurse of the year, Rachel Oaks, one of the most enjoyable parts of the job is providing the best care possible for her patients.
Shen also loves working with younger nurses, helping to educate them and supporting them in their new role.
Finalists in the awards were peer nominated, and Ms Wittich said while reading through nominations she consistently saw a themes of kindness, going above and beyond what is needed and being an advocate for patients.
"I'd like to thank each and everyone of our nursing staff not only for their dedication to nursing, but also to Bathurst Health Service."
Paul Rossiter, who was recently a patient at Bathurst Base commended the care he received while he was there, and said it was great to see the work the nursing staff do acknowledged.
"Honestly the staff here are the best; we are so blessed to have this hospital," he said.
Mr Rossiter said the care he received in Bathurst Base Hospital following his surgery was so good, he wrote a letter to management expressing his thanks.
"Bathurst Base Hospital is literally one the best," he said.
