The initiative, run annually, sees places all across Australia read the same book at the same time, to encourage children to read.
At Bathurst Library, mayor Graeme Hanger read the book Alpacas with Maracas to a crowd of around 100 children, family members and carers.
Library manager Patou Clerc said it was a very enjoyable experience.
"The story that is chosen is always by an Australian author and illustrator and this year it was Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgove, which really captured the imagination of libraries everywhere," she said.
"The mayor read the story with great gusto and there will be other stories read by the team."
The library team also awarded prizes to children for their artwork, which were created prior to National Simultaneous Storytime.
Ms Clerc said the event was one of the most popular on the library's calendar, always drawing in a big audience, and she loved seeing the children enjoying the stories.
"I'm amazed at how well behaved the kids were this morning, they just sat there and listened," she said.
