The students have gone on a six-game winning run to start the New Holland Agriculture Cup season and go into Saturday's match as favourites to keep that streak alive.
Last round's 11-0 win over the Blayney Rams was a far from perfect showing from the students, who know a big Wombats pack could roll over them should similar complacency creep into this match.
Burrell said the recent success for CSU is no excuse to slack off as the season's halfway point looms.
"Mudgee has probably been the one team over the past few seasons that's really troubled us," he said.
"Narromine are obviously an unbelievable team but Mudgees forward pack is really good. We have to step up because Mudgee always give us a good contest.
"We've got to start playing teams in the way we want to play, and not off their merit. I think we were lazy last week, made too many mistakes and were probably a bit too confident."
It was playing to their own strengths which earned CSU their stunning win over the Narromine Gorillas but since then they've never quite reached those dizzying highs in attack.

Burrell believes, despite the chopping and changing required in the CSU lineup, the team are able to work well as a unit.
"The general consensus for what we've got up there is really good," he said.
"We've had changes week in and week out but with what the coaches have got planned for the year it's really working for us. Everyone wants to play for everyone so despite all the changes it seems to work.
"The effort at training is another big thing for us. The extra work that we've got to put in, and the belief the coaches have instilled in us, is massive.
"The focus is on getting the little one percenters right on the field and not having many lapses."
The CSU lineup changes continue for another week.

CSU will be hungry to celebrate Super Saturday with a win. The day brings together members of all major CSU sporting clubs to cheer each other on at events.
