As the weather gets cooler, the prevalence of influenza necessitates the importance of maintaining a healthy diet to strengthen the immune system.
Bathurst Wholefood Co-operative shop co-ordinator Kiri Armstrong said the incorporation of seasonal vegetables into meals will go a long way towards maintaining a healthy well-being.
"At this time of year, I would suggest sticking to soups and slow-cooked meals featuring fresh vegetables such as pumpkins, zucchini, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower," Ms Armstrong said.
"Winter is also a great time to move to root vegetables such as ginger, garlic and turmeric, as they are currently in season."
Ms Armstrong said winter is a prime season to be adventurous with soups, as there are numerous ingredients that work well together to create a desirable blend.
"I made a soup from scratch the other day using broccoli, cauliflower and vegetable stock, and it was absolutely beautiful," she said.
Each week, the Bathurst Wholefood Co-operative posts a recipe to their website [bathurstwholefood.org] incorporating the finest seasonal produce.
