Shoppers were evacuated shortly before 9am as NSW Fire and Rescue crews rushed to the scene to investigate the incident.
Sprinklers were activated in the car park while staff from the Coles supermarket gathered in the outdoor car park behind George Street.
A spokesperson for Bathurst Fire and Rescue said it appeared to be a false alarm.
The spokesperson said fire personnel were unable to find anything and it was expected that staff would be allowed to re-enter the building.
