Perthville's John Seaman and his family were on their way home on Saturday when they spotted a furry grey critter in the headlights.
They pulled over and saw a koala crossing the road late at night.
Mr Seaman, a long-time resident of the area, said he had not seen a koala there before and he got out of the car to ensure it made it safely across the road.
"The kids were in the backseat and they thought it was fantastic," Mr Seaman said.
"There's the odd sighting of koalas around there but I've not seen them before.
"I got out of the car to shepherd him to safety. He went straight up a wooden strainer post and off into some trees."
Mr Seaman, a salesman with Bowyer and Livermore Livestock, captured a video of the whole thing on his phone and it has been viewed almost 4000 times on the Bowyer and Livermore Facebook page.
The video is also available to view on the Western Advocate website and Facebook pages.
Cold comfort for region's visitors
THE Western Advocate team was pleased to see Bathurst get a mention in one of the metropolitan papers recently.
Sydney Morning Herald columnist Richard Glover wrote a piece in which he sang the praises of visiting inland NSW's coldest cities during the depths of winter.
Glover said the Australian coast ["the lotus-eating land"] is perfectly suited to the heat of an Australian summer but it's the country's inland that provides an austere beauty and a greater depth of character as the cold settles on the land.
"Australians are adept at spending their summers heading for the coast," he wrote.
"Maybe we should be just as practised at using winter to head inland to places like Taralga, Katoomba, Bathurst, Orange, Armidale, Glen Innes and the many others."
Bathurst was bursting with visitors over the long weekend and, if Glover is correct, it could be that not only are people willing to put up with the cold, they might actually come here for it.
