And if you fall into the latter category, like the Bathurst Giants do, then that's not always a great thing.
The Giants return to the Central West AFL fold this Saturday for the first time in three weeks when they play host to a Dubbo Demons side hoping to make it three wins on the trot.
Giants will be toiling hard to piece together momentum after a general long weekend bye and a regular bye over the past fortnight - and the Demons won't make that easy.
Dubbo make the trip to George Park 1 fresh off a big win over the Bathurst Bushrangers Rebels.
Giants coach Mark Kennedy knows the Demons will be buoyed by that effort and needs his side to find an early edge in Saturday's game.
"We're trying to build back momentum through training and getting game preparation back into the guys. It's been quite disjointed," he said.
"Because we dropped that game over at Parkes - who took it to us and came away with the chocolates - it put us on the back foot and we really need to hit back against Dubbo because they are on the back of a win against Rebels.
"They'll be fired up coming into this one."
Demons scored the bragging rights from the meeting at Dubbo earlier this season.
Giants were able to match it with the hosts over the back half of the game but their slower start proved the difference in a 75-66 result.
With the clubs sitting level on the ladder, alongside the Bushrangers Outlaws, but with only two spots left in finals it's a pressure game for both sides.
The three clubs sit on 20 points with the Rebels on 24 and Orange Tigers leading the way with 28.
"They're a good side and probably one of the favourites. If you want to put a circle around a team to make finals it's one that I'd draw," Kennedy said of the Demons.
"If we can make the top four then we wouldn't want to meet them in Dubbo because that is one of the hardest games you can play.
"We have to get everything in order to try and position ourselves so that doesn't happen.
"Our centre clearances and forward deliveries have to be quite crisp because we're playing on our ground, which is a bit smaller, and moving it out of the back line we have to put it to the wings and make sure we've got plenty of run around the ball."
The time off the field hasn't given the Giants an opportunity to get consistency in their lineup.
Giants have still been forced to make a raft of changes for the George Park clash.
The team are without Mitch Taylor for the rest of the year after his move to Canberra to play football.

Nic Broes is absent on his UK cricket tour while Alex Cuttiford and Oscar Mann are confirmed out for the rest of the season.
In more positive news the team welcomes back Tim French and Shaun Noyen.
"We've got numbers on the bench and another one that's been surprising for me is Scott Traves," Kennedy said.
"He's been training really well, playing great and has been rewarded with a spot in the team over the past few weeks.
"We'll throw the team we have on paddock and do the best we can and that's all that I can ask for at the end of the day."
Kennedy also gave his congratulations to a former Giant on a major milestone.
"Congrats go to Frank Bright on reaching his 400th game," he said.
"That's a big effort. He played some of those games for us and it's nice to know that we played a part, even if it was a small one, in him reaching that number."
The Giants-Rebels match starts at 2.30pm at George Park 1.
