Three months ago McLaren CEO Zak Brown fired up the imagination of Supercars fans when he revealed the two-time Formula One world champion held ambitions to test himself in other 'major sporting events' such as Bathurst.
"He wants to go and win all the big races, and he considers Bathurst to be one of those," Brown said.
But last week Alonso told motor sport website Speedcafe he had no immediate plans to join the grid at Bathurst.
"Maybe in the future. Not short term," Alonso said.
Whether or not Alonso ends up contesting the Bathurst 1000, or even the Bathurst 12 Hour, remains to be seen. However, there are plenty of ex Formula One talents who have thrilled motor sport fans at the Mount.
Two years after he won the Formula 1 championship, Jenson Button was hand-timed as doing a 1:48.8 in his McLaren-Mercedes MP4-23 at the Mount in 2011. He also steered a V8 Supercar around the circuit.
Timo Glock, former factory BMW driver, said "the circuit is legendary" when he got his first taste of Mount Panorama in the 2017 Bathurst 12 Hour.
Mark Webber did demonstration laps in a Porsche 911 GT2 Clubsport during the Bathurst 12 Hour earlier this year.
The likes of David Brabham, Andrea Montermini, Ivan Capelli and Mika Salo have also raced at the Mount.
