On Monday, Local Government Week was officially launched with a small reception at the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum.
Acting mayor Bobby Bourke said people would be surprised by all the different ways council supports the community, such as providing childcare and running cultural facilities.
"While many people are aware of roads, rates and rubbish, the breadth and diversity of what we do goes unrecognised," Cr Bourke said.
As part of Local Government Week, school children will visit the Waste Water Treatment Plant and Waste Management Centre during the week to learn about the services.
Other community members are encouraged to visit cultural facilities.
"We're a bit unique in Bathurst, we manage a lot of cultural facilities. Council is very strong in that," museums manager Janelle Middleton said.
Council's cultural facilities have some unique exhibitions and great collections running at the moment that people can see during Local Government Week.
At the Fossil Museum, the Albert Chapman collection is the talking point.
"We've had it for about a month," Ms Middleton said. "It was done by Albert Chapman. With his collection here and Warren Somerville's collection here, it makes it the largest collection of minerals in Australia."
The National Motor Racing Museum has an extensive collection of motorcycles and race cars available, while Chifley Home is bathed in history.
