The track was originally built in 2016 at the cost of $1.5 million to host the national titles, but come February 2020, riders will be flocking to the Central West city for the massive event which will act as qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Work begun on Monday, July 29, with works to bring the track up to international standard according to Bathurst Regional Council director engineering services Darren Sturgiss.
"Track improvements have commenced to ensure that the track will continue to be rated at an international standard," he said.
"Initial work is being performed by Council staff, with a specialist contractor engaged to shape the track surface and ensure UCI compliance."
Mr Sturgiss said he expects the works will take approximately two months to complete.
A post on the Bathurst BMX Club Facebook page informed club members that coaching and racing at the track would come to an immediate halt until work is finished.
Bathurst is one two cities in Australia that'll host a round of the UCI World Cup, the other being Shepparton in Victoria.
The tournament is for both men and women racers.
Plans are underway to build a clubhouse at the track and it's hoped international teams will use the track for training in the lead-up to the World Cup round.
The club has also upgraded the timing system at the track which measures riders' reaction times out of the gates and through different sections of the circuit to better tailor their training.
The Bathurst BMX Track will host its leg of the World Cup from February 6 to 9.
