To do that the students have to overcome Mudgee Wombats in this Saturday's preliminary final at University Oval, a result far from certain when you consider how close their last game was.
Last weekend's 57-10 hammering at the hands of the Gorillas didn't necessarily come about from poor CSU play but more from a relentless Narromine display in the forwards.
With more football likely to come CSU's way this Saturday it's a chance for them to show what they can do when possession comes their way.
Fullback Matthew Brouff said the chance to earn a rematch with the Gorillas a big motivator for the uni boys.
"It was only about 15 minutes into the game when most of the boys' heads went down. I felt like our defence was the reason why we lost the game so this week we've been working on that," he said.
"I don't know what it is but whenever we travel there we're just not with it. If we don't get any ball then we don't get to attack, so that's when we've got to really pick up our defence."
Mudgee produced one of their strongest games of the season against CSU in July.
The Wombats gave the students a big scare with a 24-19 loss at home, which served as a wake up call for CSU.

Brouff said his team has plenty of respect for the Wombats' power through the middle of the park.
"Their forwards definitely dominated ours, which was clear in the scrums and lineouts," he said.
"We've been lucky enough to get a second chance to make the grand final and hopefully we can capitalise on the home ground advantage.
"We're staying focused on this weekend and seeing what Mudgee will bring."
The other key factor for the students this Saturday? Discipline.
It had become a strong asset for CSU throughout the season but their red card-fest against the Dubbo Rhinos recently appears to have opened up some cracks in that area.
"We've been going pretty well all year. We had a close game against Narromine at home, where we lost it with a silly penalty we gave away towards the end," Brouff said.
"We seem to be doing that now and again. We picked up another card on the weekend and that's something which definitely didn't help us out."
