"I will never forget it. The year was 2015," he said.
"I was a mere 22-year-old travelling the country looking for answers to life's many questions and there I found it: Mount Panorama.
"The meaning of life is the need for speed."
Butterfield will be back at the scene of his philosophical awakening when he kicks off his Why So Serious? tour by performing at Panthers Bathurst this Thursday, August 22.
IN OTHER ENTERTAINMENT NEWS AROUND BATHURST:
The tour will eventually take the Newcastle-born comedian - who has made his name by being prepared to laugh at everything - to New Zealand, the UK, Europe and the United States.
But first he will take on Bathurst, where the city's best-known geographical feature still has a spell over him.
"I have done many laps around Mount Panorama in my dreams," he said.
"In fact, when the big race is on, I hook the telly up in my car and I pretend that I'm taking that beast at 300 kays an hour down Conrod Straight and I don't even have to leave the garage."
Bathurst also features a romantic connection.
"I have an ex-girlfriend who lives there, but I'm over it, I swear ... next question," he said.
Butterfield - who was described by Newcastle Live as managing to "entertain and offend in equal measure" - will be hitting the road for the Why So Serious? tour after a sell-out run at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
And the difference between a city audience and a country audience?
"City audiences are a bit precious," he said. "Country audiences are full of bogans, and as a bogan we really connect and get along with one another."
Isaac Butterfield will play at Panthers Bathurst this Thursday, August 22.
Shows will follow at Albury, Canberra, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and his stomping ground of Newcastle.
