Last week, Bathurst Regional Council accepted a tender from Talis Civil Pty Ltd to carry out the work needed to re-align the intersection and construct a roundabout.
The tender was valued at $2,209,899.40, and for that price it will see the majority of the works undertaken under traffic control, ensuring traffic can still use the intersection while the roundabout is being built.
Kent and Dianne McNab, the most vocal campaigners for a roundabout, welcomed the news that there would be minimal disruption.
"We're happy that there won't be massive disruption to all the businesses because they're going to only close a street at a time," Mrs McNab said.
They understand that there will only be about one week during the construction phase where the intersection would be closed completely, which they said was nothing compared to the months it will take to carry out the upgrade.
Council plans to meet with Talis Civil in the coming weeks and following those discussions can confirm a timeline for the works.
Prior to any construction, council will hold community information sessions to answer any questions residents may have about the project.
The campaign for a roundabout at the troublesome intersection started at the end of 2016, following an incident that resulted in a car ploughing into the fence of the Assumption School.
It happened on the same day as Kindergarten orientation, not long after young children and their parents had arrived.
The McNabs saw the accident as the final straw and, after holding concerns for decades, started campaigning for safety improvements.
"The prospect of a repeat of that accident, or the danger of a more deadly accident, has driven us from day one," the couple said prior to the tender being accepted.
