I AM greatly troubled that state Member for Bathurst Paul Toole has voted for the abortion bill ("Paul Toole reveals reasons for his abortion bill support", August 12) because medically, scientifically, philosophically and morally, the foetus is a human being.
We see this because the:
- DNA of the foetus is distinct from that of the mother (and may also have a different gender and blood type).
- The foetus is living. Dead things do not grow.
- The foetus is a whole human being, as the 'product' of a man and a woman.
As a living human being, the foetus has a right to life which surely trumps the right of any other to exercise their freedom.
It is understandable that Mr Toole does not want to load extra trauma on women in an already difficult situation.
But the proposed new abortion law replaces this with something much worse - easy access to legalised murder.
This is a matter of the most profound sadness.
