After bowls was cancelled last Saturday week due to the cold snap and snow, the weather was much better for bowls this week.
Tuesday, August 13
Rink two (rink runners up)
T. Beck, R. McGarry and J. Davis opened the scoring against R. Stackenberg, B. Gresser and N. Witney and were never headed for the rest of the game. Scores were close, 8-4 until the eighth end, but with 12 shots over the next three ends saw the score blow out to 20-4. Further scores for both sides over following ends were only minor but a five on the 18th by team Davis put them on the path to convincing winners 28-13.
Rink three
T.Hogan( swinger), M. Burke and P. Naylor got off to a flyer against T. Hogan, I. Warren and T. Pickstone and by end of end three led 7-1. Scoring became very hard with team Pickstone scoring a three on end six and then team Naylor a five on end 13 to lead 18-8 , finally winning 23-15
Rink four
P. Williams, G. Ballard and A. Clark opened the scoring against T. Clark, J. Clark and R. Luck with a three and by end ten led 13-3. A 4 on end 13 by team Clark further increased the lead to 19-4. Team Luck then started to pull back the deficit with ten shots over last five ends but fell short with team Clark winning 23-14.
Rink five ( rink winners)
T. Swaddling and T. Burke scored a four on end three against T. Chifley and G. Death to lead 5-1. From then on the mat changed hands frequently and at end 17 scores were locked at 14 all. A four by team Death on next end saw them ahead but a four and a three by team Burke saw them fall over the line 21-19.
Rink six
J. Banning and K. Hartwig with a four on end three against K. Howard and N. Kable saw them in the lead 5-1. Team Kable got their act together and over the next four ends scored 11 shots to lead 12-5. Team Hartwig came back with a vengeance and by end 16 they led 17-14, but a four on next end saw team Kable take the lead, never to lose it again and with a six on last end saw them winners 27-21.
Saturday 17 August
Rink four: Men's Triples Championship ( Semi-Final)(rink winners)
After some very high scoring over the first eight ends K. Connors, P. Naylor and M. McDonald led T. Sharpham, D. Josh and G. Cameron 17-15. Consecutive threes over three ends saw team McDonald lead 24-15 after 12 ends and even though team Cameron fought back, team McDonald held on to win a closely fought last nine ends to win 30-21.
Rink three
In a very close game, T. Hogan(swinger), F. Farrell and A. North led T. Hogan, S. Chapman and G. Urza 11-5 after ten ends. Then the game exploded with team Urza scoring a six on the 11th, team North a six on the 12th and Urza a seven on the 13th to lead 18-17. The adrenalin rush then subsided, scoring slowed quite a lot but with threes on the 19th and 21st , team Urza " fell over the line" by 25-23. Tony Hogan is now our resident "swinger", at bowls only.
Rink five
T. Parker, M. Elms and T. Pickstone came out of the blocks firing and led G. Ballard, R. McGarry and K. Hartwig 12-3 after sven ends. Team Pickstone then "went to sleep" and scores were level 12-12 after 13 ends. After their brief hibernation, team Pickstone started scoring again and led 16-13 after 18 ends. Team Hartwig were not conceding and with a four and a two on next two ends held on to win a closely contested game 19-18.
Rink six
T. James, G. Quartly- Scott and P. Drew after losing the first end to R. Minogue, T. Press and A. Clark, "took the sword" to their opponents and led 26-4 after 15 ends before team Clark scored again with a two on end 16 (they had scored a three on end six).The horse had bolted and team Drew won 31-10. A Stewards inquiry is being held with swabs to be taken.
Sunday, August 18 Men's Triples Championship( Semi-Final)
P. Drew, R. Harvey and C. Bush, with a five on end three, led T. James, K. Howard and T. Pickstone 8-6 after end seven. Team Bush then won the next five ends to lead 18-6 after 12 ends. Team Pickstone scored a two on end 13, team Bush won the next four ends to lead 22-8, then a five on end 19 and finally won the game 28-11, which included 5 dead ends.
Social Mixed Bowls
There were nine turn up in the afternoon to play and all had an enjoyable afternoon. A reminder social mixed bowls is played every Sunday with names from 12.45pm and a start at 1pm.
BATHURST CITY

Wednesday Social Jackpot Bowls saw five games of pairs.
Game one
Gary Hotham and Joe Young 19 defeated Ian Schofield and Ian Cunningham 14. The two Ian's won the first foour ends to lead 10-0. Gary and Joe trailed 7-13 after six ends but then restricted the two Ian's to just one shot over the next six ends running out winners. Ends to Gary and Joe 11-7.
Game two
John McDonagh and Ross James 21 defeated Phillip Murray and Geoff Thorne 15. Ross and John had the better of the start and led 10-5 after six ends, they maintained the momentum and led 19-8 after 12 ends. Geoff and Phillip won five of the last six ends to reduce the deficit but could not make up the shots. Ends were 9-9 but five shots on the 12th end to Ross and John was the difference.
Game three
John Finlay and John Martin 26 defeatd Hamish Mackay and Alan Clarke seven. The two Johns had the better of the starts and led 11-3 after six ends and 16-6 after 12 ends. They then won five of the next six ends scoring ten shots to one leaving Alan and Hamish to wonder what went wrong. Ends to the winners 12-6.
Game four
Barry McPherson and Jim Grives 15 defeated Arch Ledger and Jack Smith 13. Jack and Arch led 5-4 after a tight six ends. Jim and Barry fought back winning 5 of the next six ends to lead 10-7. Jack and Arch fought back to draw level on the 17th end 13-13. Two shots to Jim and Barry on the last end gave them the game. Ends to the winners 11-7.
Game five
Robert Thompson and Pat Duff 16 defeated Robert Miskell and Ray Noonan 15. Scores were level 6-6 after six ends. Robert and Ray led 10-8 after 12 ends then Robert and Pat scored even shots over the next two ends to lead 15-10. Ray and Robert won the next four ends to level the score 15-15 after 18 ends. Team Duff scored one shot on the extra end to win another close game. Ends to Team Noonan 11-7. Friday saw one game of Triples with a big contingent of bowlers in Narromine for the annual Gubthorne Memorial Day
Game one
John Martin, Joe Young and Norm Hayes 18 defeated Elizabeth Bull, John McDonagh and Ray Noonan ten. Team Hayes led 6-4 after six ends and 11-8 after 12 ends. Team Noonan only managed to win two of the last six ends, allowing team Hayes to increase the lead. Ends to winners 10-8. The midweek Jackpot was not won.
Saturday saw one game of Club Fours Championship and three games of social Bowls.
In the Championship club game
Denis Oxley, Ray Noonan, Dennis Harvey and John Finlay 17 defeated John McDonagh, Ian Schofield, Peter Wibberley and Alex Birkens 16. Team Birkens won four of the first seven ends to lead 6-3. They increased the lead leading 12-5 after 14 ends. Team Finlay won five of the next seven ends scoring 12 shots to four to win a very good close game of Bowls by one shot. Ends to Team Birkens 11-10.
Social Bowls
Game one
Jack Smith and Mick Sewell 34 defeated John Fulton and Joe Young 15. Jack and Mick led 11-7 after seven ends and 21-9 after 14 ends. They cruised to victory winning five of the next seven ends to run out winners. Victors Jack and Mick were relentless and John and Joe did not have the answer. Ends to the winners 13-8.
Game two
Paul Rodenhuis and John Archer 23 defeated Phillip Murray and Bryan Bromfield 17. Bryan and Phillip led 4-2 after four ends, the Paul and John fought back to lead 5-4 after seven ends and led 14-13 after 14 ends. Bryan and Phillip won the next three ends to lead 17-24 after 17 ends. John and Paul won the last four ends, scoring 9 shots to score a good win. Ends to the winners 14-7.
Game three
Bruce Rich, Arch Ledger and Norm Hayes 19 defeated Grant Brenton, Barry McPherson and Hans Hummelshoj 14. Team Hayes got the best of starts leading 7-0 after three ends. Team Hummelshoj won the next four ends to level 7-7 after seven ends. Scores were level 12-12 after 14 ends. Team Hayes won four of the next six ends to lead 19-14. The game was called after 20 ends. Ends to the winners 11-9.
Saturday saw ten bowlers playing in Narromine with Bob Lindsay Geoff Thorne and Gary Hotham making the semifinal being beaten by the Narromine team that included Neville Townsend and our host Terry McDonald who were beaten in the final. Another great 'Gubthorne' Memorial Day.
Bathurst Real Estate Junior Development Squad
After practicing their weight control the four juniors play a game of pairs with Abby Bromfield and Koby Collins playing Kaylem Cosgrove and Eamon Wibberley. One shot to Abby and Koby followed by a triple of the second set Kaylem and Eamon a hard task to come back then they won the next two ends picking up a triple of their own to trail 6-5.
Abby and Koby won the next two ends to win 9-5 in a good game. Well done all. Thanks to Paul, Bryan and Mick who ran the squad in Ross' absence. Brody Carter another member of the Junior Squad was in Dubbo representing Zone 4 in the state championship.
Don't forget to get along on Saturday at 9:30am to watch our club pairs championship. John Fulton and Ken Waddell play in the Zone Champion of champions. The members draw is on Friday at 5:30pm.
