Two minutes on stage reciting a poem might be the stuff that nightmares are made of for some people, but Sophie L Meredith is taking it all in her stride.

This is the third year running that she has made the state finals and she earned her place there in the Bathurst heat earlier this month.

Her poetry slam performance was a poem she penned about her sister losing her baby during childbirth.

"My sister really likes it and thinks of it as a tribute to Isobelle [her baby]," Ms Meredith said.

In her first year at the state finals (in 2017), she placed third, while last year she finished fourth.

Bathurst woman Alice Blackwood also made it through to the state finals after she competed at the Mudgee heat this month.

Ahead of the NSW finals on October 19, Ms Meredith said she has a lot of preparation to complete.

"This year you have to do a new poem for each round ... you need to have two for the nationals and a third just in case there's a draw," she said.

Ms Meredith has already picked out the topics for her three poems, they include: one about the left and right of society and how people are in factions; another is a personal story about the 'Me Too' movement; the last is about domestic violence.

"I'm looking forward to it and I'm trying not to take it too seriously," she said.

The NSW final will be held at Customs House on October 19, with the nationals the following day at Sydney Opera House.
