Whos Driving ($5) had swept round the outside of the field to make a charge to the line but was challenged from even wider outside by Smiling Sam ($4.60, Mat Rue).
The pair hit the line together and Whos Driving edged out Smiling Sam to break his Bathurst hoodoo.
The Red River Hanover x Artina Rena gelding had made nine previous trips to the track but had never broken through for victory.
Day had missed out on fielding any runners in her previous journey to Bathurst after her truck broke down on her way to the track.
The win for Whos Driving - her only runner of the meeting - went a long way towards putting that behind her.
"He had a good run. He was dropping back a lot in grade so it was good to see him win," Day said.
"He's been a great horse for the owners so it's nice to see him win another one for them again this season."
Whos Driving and Smiling Sam stayed out of the early speed battle after starting from gates six and seven respectively.

Instead it was inside starter Karinya Max ($8, Angela Hedges) who cruised to an easy lead.
Race favourite Lord Denzel ($3.20, Doug Hewitt) came across from out wide and looked to settle in behind Karinya Max.
He was forced to accept the death seat when Dont Tell Errol moved up behind the leader.
There was space further behind Dont Tell Errol for both Whos Driving and Smiling Sam to slot in, but the pair stayed in the outside line to keep their options open.
There were troubling signs for the favourite when Hewitt started to work Lord Denzel and he struggled to keep pace with Karinya Max.
The one-out one-back runner, Dinosaurus Rex, had peeled three wide to make a challenge on the favourite but it was on his outside where the big move was coming.
Whos Driving flew past Dinosaurus Rex and a tiring Lord Denzel to mount a challenge against Karinya Max inside the final 300m.
Hedges' leader battled gamely but was no chance of staving off Day's flying gelding.
Smiling Sam had tacked on behind Whos Driving over the home stretch and was the fastest finishing runner in the race.
Luckily for Day the race distance wasn't 1,731 metres.
Whos Driving took out the event in a mile rate of 1:57.9 to end a run of 14 races without a win.
Karinya Max held on to retain third place.
