On Monday, September 30 at our Orange campus, India's only recipient of a doctorate in the study of falcons will present a free public lecture on the city's rare peregrine falcons.
Dr Zubair Medammal, assistant professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of Calicut in India, will offer his insights on the majestic birds' hunting, feeding, health, breeding and threats.

During his trip to Australia, staff members from Charles Sturt University will brief Dr Medammal on the Falcon Cam Project which takes place at the university's campus in Orange.
The Falcon Cam Project, run by volunteers, has placed fixed CCTV cameras and a roosting box at the top of the university's water tower to study, monitor and record the breeding and natural behaviour of a peregrine falcon family that calls the university home.

Dr Cilla Kinross, who is an adjunct lecturer in environmental management at Charles Sturt and one of the volunteers for the Falcon Cam Project, says footage the project has captured over the past 11 years is unique because falcons are notoriously difficult to observe due to the fact they live and fly at such great heights.
Dr Medammal has been studying falcons for more than 20 years and his research has taken him across the world to countries such as Sri Lanka, Germany, China, and the United Arab Emirates.
He obtained his doctorate from the University of Calicut and has since received many accolades for his work, including the Kerala Government's Pravasi Award for outstanding research in foreign countries.

His lecture at Orange will begin with a short walking tour to observe the peregrine falcons living in the university's water tower.
The lecture will start at 5.30pm at the Charles Sturt campus in Orange, building 1004, room 120.

On Wednesday, October 9 at the Bathurst Library, journalist Gabrielle Chan will present a talk and question and answer session based on her book Rusted Off: Why Country Australia Is Fed Up, recently shortlisted for the PM's award for non-fiction.
Gabrielle has been a journalist for more than 30 years. Since 2013, she has worked for Guardian Australia as a political correspondent, Politics Live blogger and senior writer.
In Rusted Off, Gabrielle looks to her own rural community's main street for answers to the big questions driving voters.
Why are we so fed up with politics? Why are formerly rusted-on country voters deserting major parties in greater numbers than their city cousins? Can ordinary people teach us more about the way forward for government?
This is sure to be a thought-provoking and enjoyable evening, so please join us at 6pm at Bathurst Library for Gabrielle's talk at 6.30pm.
