The first exam that students will be required to sit is English, which is a two paper exam, with the second paper on Friday.
English (whether it's English Studies, Standard or Advanced) is the only compulsory subject for HSC students.
Ahead of Thursday's first exam, it's mixed emotions for Kelso High Campus students Bridget Annand and Isaac Connor.
"It's exciting," Ms Annand said on starting her exams on Thursday.
"You've spent 13 years at school and then it's all over. You don't know what to expect and that's exciting."
And while Mr Connor is feeling a bit excited about his exams, he's also feeling quite nervous too.
"I'm nervous but I'm definitely excited to get them done," he said.
"I haven't thought too far ahead [about what I want to do after school]. There's a lot of back doors you can go through if you don't go to university, but I still want to do my best."
The HSC exam period will run over a period of almost four weeks, commencing on Thursday, October 17, and concluding on Monday, November 11.

For those students studying Design and Technology or Textiles and Design, they will have to wait the longest to finish their HSC, as these two exams will be held on the final day.
