Mr Ryan said his mother had raised an issue to the then Bathurst City Council 40 years ago about flash-flooding to residents on the northern side of Vittoria Street due to poor drainage and compressed drain pipes.

And on Thursday, Mr Ryan, who lives on that flood-affected northern side of Vittoria Street, was a happy man when Bathurst Regional Council completed work to clear and deepen a nearby channel that flows into Jordan Creek, remove roots from nearby trees that have grown into the gutters and clearing nearby leaves and debris.

"I'm as happy as one can be until we see how it can function, when it does rain," he said.

"It's been a problem for 40 years, since my mother original raised the issues. It would always flood down my driveway and neighbours, flooding the backyards and garages."

However, while Mr Ryan is pleased that council has completed the work, he's still unsure it will cope when another downpour of rain occurs.

"We'll have to wait and see until it next rains, but that could be ages," he said.

The Western Advocate also spoke with Jim Schaerf, who has lived on the southern side of Vittoria Street for over 50 years.

He said flooding has always been an issue in the area as long as he can remember living there, saying the tree roots have grown into the gutters, affecting the flow of water.

"It would build up on our side and cross over the road to the northern side," he said.

"There were also issues because it would flood over the road meaning it wasn't safe for cars. They were either driving slow because of the flow or driving too fast, which could've led to an accident."

One of the most recent issues that the Western Advocate was aware of was back in late January, when Mr Ryan recorded 50 millimetres of rain in just 40 minutes.

Rain water lingered in the gutters outside of his property for days after the downpour, while his backyard was flooded, as well as Vittoria Street.
