North has been adopting a 'race for fun' approach to triathlon lately but showed he's got plenty of pace as he finished at the the top of the men's 30-34 years standings.
He completed the one kilometre swim, 30km ride and 10km run in one hour, 41 minutes and 57 seconds.
His time was strong enough for 21st overall and left him feeling great about the preparation he and coach Hobson had put in before the event.
"I was just racing with no expectations. I didn't know where the form was going to be. Richard and I were doing it for a hit out but I think we were both really happy with our outcomes. It shows our training has got us heading in the right direction," North said.
"I was happy with all the legs, nothing stuck out as better or worse than another. To finish and feel comfortable throughout each leg was really pleasing."
Due to the staggered race waves North was able to receive some encouragement from his coach.
"When I started my first lap on the bike Richard was starting his second so he pretty much towed me around on my first lap. That definitely got me going," he said.
"He was riding very fast, even through the corners. It was definitely full gas."

Cutler also performed well at Nepean, finishing ninth overall and missing out on the top prize in her age division by just 16 seconds.
Cutler completed the course in 1:54:38 on the back of three consistent legs.
While her swim, bike and run lived up to her expectations Cutler has identified one area that she's going to focus on.
"Looking back at the results I feel like I've lost that race due to my transitions, which is the story of my life," she said.
"I've had bike troubles so I thought I'd go down there to see how that felt, since I've got the Western Sydney Half Ironman coming up in three weeks and it's on the same course.
"It was a great race to do to see where I'm at. I finished third in my age group at Western Sydney last year and it's looking like there's 68 in my age group in three weeks time. It'll be a tough race.
"I'll do my best over that time and hope for a good race."
Hobson was second in his division, once again showing his cycling prowess with a 45:16 leg in the saddle.
In their respective age groups Thomas Hanrahan came home sixth, Darren Fenton was 37th while Danielle Patterson battled through illness to reach the finish.
Hobson, Hanrahan and Fenton also used the event as preparation for the upcoming Western Sydney Half Ironman.
