Punters had sent Misterfreeze ($1.90) into odds-on favouritism following his scorching fast trial win over Inter Dominion Consolation champion Ellmers Image but Castalong Shadow beat his fancied rival by a head.
Castalong Shadow was first up since a very disappointing showing at Menangle in July, and after two average trial performances punters had decided to steer clear in the lead up to the Gold Crown 34 2YO Sustaining Payments Due Pace (1,730 metres).
However, he sat well positioned behind leader Misterfreeze throughout the run and showed plenty of gusto to charge him down in a hot 27.4 final quarter.
Wednesday's meeting was a horror one for favourites.
Amanda Turnbull's Rock On was the only favourite to salute across the seven race program, taking out the first of the Star Trek Heats.
