CHRISTMAS is usually a time for celebrating, but for families on the land, there hasn't been much to celebrate in recent times.

As the drought's grip on landholders continues to tighten, many farming and agricultural families are lucky to get through the week, let alone think about December, Christmas and presents.
In otherwise bleak times for rural communities, two women have made an appeal to communities across the state, Bathurst included, to help brighten the Christmas for those affected by drought.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Elzette Connan and Tracey Potts have established a donation drive called Ladies of the Land NSW, which aims to make Christmas a little brighter for ladies living on the land during the drought.
In a Facebook post, Elzette and Tracey said often ladies living in the bush often put themselves last.
"It's our turn to put them first," they said.
In tough times, it's the little luxuries that go first.
In a letter written by a "lady grazier" published on the Ladies of the Land Facebook site, the grazier told of the difficulties facing families.
When those luxuries are lovingly and thoughtfully given in a Pamper Pack you feel love from across the country.
"Hand creams, lip gloss, lipstick and perfume are luxuries that are first to go when prioritising the little left in the budget for groceries. As are a packet of fancy biscuits or flavoured coffee sticks or iced tea packets that to us are a treat as much as lollies, chips or soft drinks are for our farm kids.
"When those luxuries are lovingly and thoughtfully given in a Pamper Pack you feel love from across the country sent from a Drought Angel who doesn't know your name - but is holding your hand and heart in an environmental and financial situation none of us could have prepared for."
The pair have put out a call for donations from across the state, and they have arranged drop off points as well.
In Bathurst the gift hampers can be dropped off at John Matthew's Chemworld Chemist in George Street, or Brilliant Street Cafe, Brilliant Street.
The donations must be made before December 10, which will ensure their delivery to recipients prior to Christmas.
People are being asked to put together a shoe box with special pamper items, wrap it and drop it off.
"Any gift would be appreciated anything from small arts and crafts to pampering toiletries- candles, special coffee or tea, chocolates, a scarf, magazine subscription, vouchers and giftcards, magazines, crosswords or Sudoku, with a note and a special message attached."
