In the fourth and final run of the Formula Libre 2001cc and Over category on Sunday, Oastler, in his OMS 28, finished in a time of 34.88 seconds.

Second went to Dean Amos, who might've have thought he had been quick enough to beat Oastler's time, but he would've been guttered to find out his time was just short.

Dean Tighe finished third in a time of 37.92 seconds.

Doug Barry was the only driver that was able to finish under the 40 second mark.

Oastler said the win at Bathurst, in a car he constructed himself, is one of his best achievements in motor sport, which is a big call considering he's a former technical director of a Formula One team.

"Five out six is really nice but winning it at Bathurst is very special," he said.

"Bathurst is sort of the holy grail for motor racing in Australia, having spelt my childhood watching Alan Moffat, so winning an Australian championship in Bathurst is sort of a nirvana.

"It's a wonderful privilege to use the track. I've had my cars win the Indy 500 a couple of times and cars on the front row at grand prixs, but from a personal achievement, winning the Australian Hill Climb Championship at Bathurst in a car I built and drove myself is right up there."

The remaining drivers in Oaster's category included Gary West (winner in 2004, 2006 and 2008) - who suffered a workshop fire prior to travelling from Western Australia - Warwick Hutchinson Ron Hay, Doug Barry, Bob Bell and Greg Ackland (winner in 2013).

While West did make the trip to Bathurst after the freak accident, he was unable to finish his first run and did not receive a time.

Oastler - who is now based at Bega on the South Coast - said the finish was incredible.

"I went first and then Dean went two after me," he said.

"You know it's a good run but you don't know your time straight away. A few people were clapping and giving me the thumbs up when I was going back into the pits, so obviously it was okay.

"I watched things unfold as young Dean came up the hill a few minutes later and saw his time two hundredth of a second slower. His time was incredible and so was the finish."

Oastler's previous Australian Hill Climb Championships wins came in 2014 (at Ringwood Park, NSW), 2015 (Jacks Hill, Western Australia), 2016 (Bryant Park, Victoria) and 2018 (Bryant Park, Victoria).

This year marked the ninth occasion that Bathurst has hosted the Australian Hill Climb Championship, following on from 1956, 1967, 1976, 1996, 2000, 2006, 2008 and 2012.
