A MAN who smashed his way into a car parked at Bathurst railway station before stealing a Navman device has been jailed following a hearing in the Bathurst Local Court this week.

Raymond Murray, 22, formerly of Booth Street in Windradyne, appeared in custody and via audio visual link for sentencing by magistrate Cate Follent.
The court heard Murray had "substantial difficulties in his formative years" and, despite his young age, there were guarded prospects of his rehabilitation.

A witness statement given to the court during the hearing told how on June 21 this year, the car's owner parked at Bathurst railway station, locked the car and took keys.
She caught the bus to Sydney and returned the following day. As she walked to her car, she said she saw a line of glass on the ground.
"I opened the door and saw the glove box was ransacked and the centre console. A number of CDs had been moved and my Navman had been stolen. I saw my shed keys had also been taken from the centre console."
Ms Follent said there was no alternative but a full-time custodial sentence.
On the larceny charge, Murray was convicted and sentenced to a fixed term two months' jail from October 29.
For destroying or damaging property, he was convicted to a fixed term six months' jail, starting October 29 and expiring April 28, 2020.
