The ViDe virtual dental consults and concierge service, now available at Moodie's, allows pharmacy customers to speak with and interact with a dentist online.
ViDe founder Dr Christine May selected Moodie's as the trial site after a chance encounter when she was in Bathurst.
"Christine came into our pharmacy and noticed our clinic rooms and asked about what services we provided in there," Moodie's pharmacist in charge Krysti-Lee Rigby said.
"That is how the conversation about implementing ViDe into our pharmacy first came about."
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Pharmacy assistant Ashleigh Carter, who has been trained in the ViDe service, said it would be an attractive option for a number of clients.
They will include people who don't have time to go to the dentist or find it difficult to go to the dentist, among others.
It will also be attractive for people who have a fear of dentists.
Ms Carter said an intra-oral camera in the pharmacy will be used to take pictures of the patient's mouth that will then be sent off to the ViDE dentist.
An appointment will be booked, for as soon as 15 minutes after the photos have been sent away, and the patient will have a live video consultation with the ViDe dentist to determine the problem and how it should be treated.
The patient might then be referred to a dental practice for hands-on treatment or might have a script sent to Moodie's for filling.
Ms Carter said she had been impressed by the service during her training.
"I have done the whole process as if I was a patient," she said.
"I have a fear of dentists, so I found it quite comfortable and easy to talk to her [Ms May]."
Ms Carter said the plan was for the ViDe service, if successful at Moodie's, to be rolled out across other parts of the Life Pharmacy group.
"We're the trial store and we'll see how it goes from there," she said.
