BATHURST Wallabies Triathlon Club officials might joke that Jack Reen "only knows two speeds - flat out or faster", but given the way he blazed through Sunday's short course race it was an apt description.
Reen covered the 300 metres swim, 16 kilometre cycle and 2.5km run course more than four minutes faster than any of his rivals, stopping the clock at 40 minutes, 53 seconds.
While Mitch England, Tyler Johnson and Thomas Press led the way out of the pool with a 34 seconds advantage over Reen, he reeled them in on the cycle leg.
Reen's effort on the bike - a 24 minutes, 19 seconds split - was the third fastest cycle effort of the entire field with only the more experience long course duo Nick North and Josh Stapley going faster.
Reen then flew through the run in 9:06 to take the win ahead of Mark Windsor (45:08) and Danny Weal (45:56).
The women's short event was won by Danielle Patterson (50:42) over Kate Prior and Jane Bennett.
