Dayne Arron Willott, 40, of Crago Way, Mitchell appeared before magistrate Cate Follent last week to answer a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
His solicitor, Evan Dowd, told the court the circumstances surrounding the incident were heated and his client "chose to confront the victim when he should have stayed in the car".
Police facts outlined how on September 15, Willott attended a home in Walker Street, where the victim was staying, with a number of other people. Willott's new girlfriend confronted the victim and, fearing an assault, the victim fended her away.

Willott then approached the victim and punched him to the left side of the face, causing a bleeding laceration. The victim attempted to defend himself by lifting an arm over his face while Willott attempted to punch him several more times and attempted to knee him as well.
Police attended and Willott said to them: "He went to hit [my girlfriend] so I hit him."
Mr Dowd said his client attempted to punch the victim with one punch connecting and causing a laceration. He said his client admitted to police " he went too far".
Mr Dowd spoke of his client's traumatic childhood which included the death of his sister to cot death.
The court also heard Willott was diagnosed with ADHA but was not on medicine at the time of his offending behaviour.
Police prosecutor Brett Donaghy said it was a serious assault which caused a decent injury.

Sgt Donaghy said the accused has matters of violence in the past, yet he "still goes out and does that".
"It's a serious matter calling on a serious penalty," he said.
Ms Follent said the court would take into account Willott's early plea of guilt but noted he was on parole at the time of the offence.
He was jailed for 12 months from November 4, 2019, with a non parole period of seven months.
An appeal has been lodged.
