In a good sign as the Inter Dominion series looms, Our Uncle Sam flew home from the rear of the field in a 27.8 seconds sectional to win over the 2,200 metres trip at Auckland on Friday night.
While the best Frisby's Sportswriter x Rooftop Fairy gelding had managed his four previous New Zealand runs - three of which were in unfamiliar standing start races - was a seventh, he was still rated a $3.90 chance for the Alexandra Park race.
With Tony Herlihy in the gig, Our Uncle Sam settled at the rear some four lengths off the pace after going from barrier eight.
But when asked to give down the back straight the final time, Our Uncle Sam quickly made up ground even though he was forced four wide.
He went on to win by a head over Solid Gold.
