He has the chance to do that at this week's Challenge Bathurst event and specifically in a highly anticipated 40-minute session on Friday afternoon which will see cars run without balance of performance restrictions.
It was under those conditions last year that German star Chris Mies claimed the outright lap record as he clocked a 1:59.2910 lap behind the wheel of an Audi R8 Ultra.
He averaged 187 kilometres per hour as the team stripped back the weight in the Audi to specifically target the record.
Prior to Mies' flyer, it was van Gisbergen who held Mount Panorama's outright lap record - a 2:01.5670 - for more than two years.
He did it during the 2016 Bathurst 12 Hour in the Tekno Autosports McLaren 650s GT3 which went on to claim the chequered flag.
This Thursday and Friday it will be a Triple Eight Mercedes AMG GT3 that van Gisbergen will steer during Challenge Bathurst's Supersprint.
Rather than being a race, the Supersprint is a battle against the clock in three, one-hour open pit lane sessions and Friday's special 40-minute session.
It offers a chance for teams to work on their set up ahead of the 2020 Bathurst 12 Hour, an event in which van Gisbergen plus his Triple Eight team-mates Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes placed outright fourth earlier this year.
Naturally Triple Eight and van Gisbergen's main goal with their GT3 entry is to win the 12 Hour, but an outright lap record prior to that enduro is still a target. The quickest the team's Mercedes has lapped the Bathurst circuit thus far is a 2:03.4495.
Friday's session, which commences at 1.10pm, will see cars still running to FIA regulations, but without the mandated balance of performance restrictions a new outright lap record is anticipated.
Van Gisbergen will face stiff opposition in the battle for that record.
Mies will be back in a Audi Sport Team Valvoline R8 LMS Evo, while his team-mate Garth Tander was also included amongst the championship class entries.
Five-time Bathurst 1000 winner Steven Richards will get behind the wheel of a BMW M6 GT3 and Tony Quinn is set to debut his new twin-turbo V8 Vantage GT3 in Australia. Luke Youlden (Audi R8 LMS) and brothers Jake and Kurt Kostecki (Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3) are also amongst those who have entered.
