Redback spiders are species of highly venomous spiders that can be found all over Australia, but thankfully an antivenom has been available since 1956, with no deaths recorded since its introduction.

Chad Bailey of X-Termin8 Pest Control said "there's a bit of a problem right now" with the spiders, but admitted that "it's not anymore than any other year".

He said there's no true way to keep redback spiders, or any spider in general, away from your house, but getting the house professionally exterminated can help.

"Not in particular, only by just getting the place sprayed every 12 months," Mr Bailey said on whether there's any good tips on keeping spiders away.

"There's not really any natural or magical causes except for whipping down things and keeping them clean. Your chemicals are the best way to go about it."

He said the garage is a popular place for spiders to make their homes, but can be found everywhere.

"You do get them in your boots too sometimes, especially if you leave them outside for ages," he said.

"Normally your play equipment, you see a lot of redbacks around there, especially the old tonka trucks in the sand pits. If you leave those alone for a while, you then might find a redback underneath it.

"Play areas are a common place too, but spiders are normally anywhere."

Mr Bailey said he's not sure why there's been an increase in spider activity this year, but said the drought may be a cause.

"There's a bit of a problem right now, but not any more than any other year," he said.

"I've just been seeing a lot this year, but it's been a lot of everything this year.

"It could've been the drought and weather conditions being good for the spiders."
