For the fourth consecutive year, Bathurst Regional Council's museums and gallery will open their doors for International Museum Selfie Day.
On Wednesday, the five participating facilities will offer free entry to encourage people to explore.
Council's museums manager, Janelle Middleton, said Museum Selfie Day has become quite popular in Bathurst.
"It's a very successful event. We get around 1000 visits to the museums on the day," she said.
The benefit of when the international day is held is that it falls within the Australian summer school holidays, making it easier for families to attend.
This year in particular, council wants the day to be about giving back to the community by offering people free activities to enjoy and airconditioned places for them to go.
"It's around giving back to the community. It's been a pretty tough 12 months with the drought and now the fires, and this is a nice way to say thank you to everybody," Ms Middleton said.
The usual selfie competition will be run on the day.
To enter, people need to post their museum-themed selfie to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #MuseumSelfieBathurst.
The most imaginative post will receive a $100 Bathurst Buy Local Gift Card.
The facilities participating in Museum Selfie Day are the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, National Motor Racing Museum, Chifley Home, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery and Bathurst Historical Society Museum.
