We need a day based on a real achievement by Australians that has benefited us all, whatever our heritage.
If our national day becomes the Monday closest to May 9, we could all unite in celebrating the opening of our first Federal Parliament in 1901.
That milestone was the culmination of an orderly process making it possible for Australians to enjoy a stable democracy.
A well-chosen National Day would happily include not only those like myself who are proud of their British heritage.
It would also bring together those Australians who are proud of over 1000 generations of Aboriginal heritage as well as recent migrants proud of the heritage they bring from many lands.
