He and his wife Lana have been Australia Day ambassadors for the last three years, the honour bestowed upon them for their work through Mama Lana's Community Foundation.

The charity was established as a way to support the homeless and disadvantaged people in their community by providing meals.

It has since grown to provide more than just meals, now able to offer shower facilities, hampers, free haircuts and more.

"When we first started Mama Lana's, we never thought there would still be a need for us seven years later, but every night our numbers grow," Mrs Borg said.

The couple has been in Bathurst with their two children over the last couple of days, attending Bathurst's awards ceremony on Friday night, the breakfast at Eglinton and the citizenship ceremony.

The community has embraced them with open arms.

"It's been fantastic. Everyone welcomes you. That's why I love coming out to communities like this; everybody is close knit and everybody welcomes [you]," Mr Borg said.

In recent years, Bathurst has increased its efforts to help people who have found themselves homeless or down on their luck.

It was something the couple spoke about at length with mayor Bobby Bourke and their message to the community is to keep showing support where they can.

"For the whole community to not turn a blind eye, you're not going to catch anything from any of these people, and you walk away a better person from helping someone in need," Mrs Borg said.
