Museum Selfie Day was celebrated on January 15, with Bathurst residents encouraged to visit the city's cultural facilities.
As an incentive, the participating museums offered free entry, and people were encouraged to take a selfie and post it online using #MuseumSelfieBathurst.
Toireasa Gallagher said that she and her husband, Mark, decided to take the whole family after their children showed an interest in Bathurst's museums.
"The kids were really keen for us to go to the Historical [Society] museum because they had been there with their school," she said.
They intended to take photos while they were there, but they didn't expect to win the prize for the best selfie.
Mrs Gallagher's photo of herself and seven-year-old son Sebastian pretending to play the piano, a shot inspired by the then upcoming Sir Elton John show, won it for them.
The family received a $100 Buy Local Gift Card and Mrs Gallagher said they would likely spend it at Annie's.
Council found more than 100 photos with the hashtag.
Museums manager Janelle Middleton said the panel of judges were looking for something creative, and the Elton element made Mrs Gallagher's photo stand out.
