Mama Kin Spender, which consists of Mama Kin [the professional name of Danielle Caruana] and Tommy Spender, formed in 2016 with a shared goal to provide a unique interpretation of the blues and roots genre.
The duo's sound incorporates Spender's atmospheric guitar and Caruana's expressive percussion with a powerful choral backdrop to accompany the pair's vocal harmonies.
Caruana said the duo incorporates the services of a local 16 to 20-piece choir at each of their gig locations to enhance their live performance.
"Each choir we engage with spends around six weeks prior to the performance rehearsing our material, then we host an intensive workshop the day before," she said.
"Every choir we've performed with has had their own distinctive flavour and it helps each performance sound different from the last."
Caruana said the choir evokes a strong sense of belonging during each performance.

"When you hear people singing together, it's one of the few experiences that prompts strong releases of oxytocin: the 'happy hormone' that makes you remember that you belong to someone," she said.
"Singing in a choir is akin to what two people experience in a prolonged embrace, and we are so much greater than the sum of our parts when we work together."
Mama Kin Spender released their debut album, Golden Magnetic, in 2018, which received an ARIA nomination that year for Best Blues and Roots Album.
However, Caruana said the duo's sound is difficult to describe.
"There's definitely elements of folk and soul, but there's raw and gritty undertones that evoke garage rock," she said.
"I can't think of any musician who can describe their music in one genre, it's like trying to describe the personality of a child."
The origins of Mama Kin Spender can be traced back to the early 2000s when Spender moved into a Melbourne share house with Caruana, her husband John Butler [John Butler Trio] and their daughter, Banjo.
"We wrote our first song together in that sharehouse and we've skirted the edges of each other's creative projects ever since," she said.
Spender is formerly of Melbourne-based rock group Offcuts, while Caruana has previously released material under her 'Mama Kin' moniker.
The duo has a new single, 'Eye of the Storm,' set for release this Friday, February 7.
Mama Kin Spender will take to the stage at Inland Sea of Sound on Saturday, February 29 from 5.15pm.
