And with a headline slot at Inland Sea of Sound coming up later this month, Higgins is promising a performance full of old and new material.

"It's going to be a really varied show with lots of old hits and a few new ones scattered in there as well," she said.

"I'll be bringing my entire five-piece band along, so audiences can expect a deep sound with plenty of expression."

Higgins has released five studio albums to date, with her most recent being 2018's Solastalgia.

Her debut album, The Sound of White, spawned the widely successful singles 'Scar,' 'Ten Days,' and 'The Special Two,' and received six ARIA Awards across 2004 and 2005.

"At the start of my career, I was mainly writing about relationships and instances of love and heartbreak; those really potent feelings you experience for the first time when you're young," Higgins said.

"I wrote some of the songs on that first record when I was 15, and they've taken on different meanings in the years since."

Higgins, who is now married with two children, said her approach to music and songwriting has grown in complexity.

"There's so much distance now between my current life and what I was going through at the start of my career," she said.

"The newer songs are quite complex in comparison to the old stuff, and there's certainly more nuance in my lyrics."

Higgins' most recent single, 'Carry You,' saw her pair up with prominent Australian musician and comedian Tim Minchin, who wrote the song for his recent ABC drama series, Upright.

"Tim and I share the same keyboard player [Sarah Belkner], and he was after someone to sing the song at the end of the series with a distinctive Australian voice," she said.

"We happened to be in Canberra at the same time, and the song came together rather naturally."

Higgins said it's important for high-profile Australian musicians to connect with communities outside the major cities whenever the opportunity arises.

"It's always a joy to play outside the big cities as the crowds are so appreciative and welcoming," she said.

"Regional towns don't get as many musicians passing through on a regular basis, so it's always important to branch out where possible."
